Leuvense wetenschappers onder leiding van Sebastian Haesler (NERF, empowered by imec, KU Leuven en VIB) hebben ontdekt hoe het komt dat nieuwe prikkels ervoor zorgen dat we sneller leren. Als iets nieuw is, komt er dopamine vrij, en dat zorgt voor zogenaamd ‘associatief leren’. De onderzoeksresultaten kunnen op termijn helpen om leerstrategieën en leerprocessen bij te sturen en om algoritmen voor machine learning te verbeteren.
Associatief leren is iets wat zowel dieren als mensen doen. Hierbij leggen we een verbinding of associatie tussen een bepaalde prikkel en een actie met een positieve of negatieve uitkomst. We gebruiken associatief leren bijna dagelijks: we belonen kinderen bijvoorbeeld voor het maken van hun huiswerk of beperken hun schermtijd als ze zich niet gedragen.
Wetenschappers weten al decennia dat ook nieuwe prikkels het associatief leren bevorderen, maar ze tastten in het duister over de onderliggende biologische mechanismen.
“Eerder onderzoek wees erop dat nieuwe, onbekende informatie het dopamine-systeem in de hersenen zou kunnen activeren. Daarom wilden we weten of dopamine-activering ook associatief leren zou kunnen stimuleren,” zegt prof. Sebastian Haesler, die de studie leidde.
Om aan te tonen dat nieuwe informatie inderdaad de dopamine-neuronen activeert, stelden de onderzoekers muizen bloot aan zowel nieuwe als bekende geuren.
“Wanneer muizen iets nieuws ruiken, worden ze erg opgewonden en beginnen ze heel snel te snuffelen. Dit natuurlijke, spontane gedrag is een uitstekende manier om te bestuderen hoe iets nieuws wordt gepercipieerd,” legt dr. Cagatay Aydin uit, een postdoctoraal onderzoeker in de groep van Sebastian Haesler. Met de muizenexperimenten bevestigde het team dat dopamine-neuronen wél werden geactiveerd door nieuwe geuren, maar niet door vertrouwde geuren.
In een tweede stap werden de muizen getraind om nieuwe en bekende geuren te associëren met een beloning.
“Toen we de dopamine-activering door nieuwe prikkels heel specifiek blokkeerden, leerden de dieren minder snel om de beloning aan de geur te koppelen. Als we net het tegenovergestelde deden, namelijk de dopamine-neuronen stimuleren bij gekende prikkels, dan ging het leren juist sneller,” zegt Joachim Morrens, doctoraatsstudent in de onderzoeksgroep.
De bevindingen tonen aan dat dopamine-activering door nieuwe prikkels leerprocessen positief beïnvloedt. De experimenten kunnen ook helpen om informaticamodellen op punt stellen. Die kunnen bijvoorbeeld een ‘nieuwsbonus’ bevatten om het positieve effect van nieuwheid op leren te verklaren. Zo’n bonus kan machine learning algoritmen versnellen en efficiënter maken.
Praktisch gezien wijst deze studie erop dat we er inderdaad goed aan doen om onze routine wat vaker te doorbreken en op zoek te gaan naar nieuwe ervaringen, om zo beter te kunnen leren.
