Student project: Smart Toilet Seat Validation

You will be part of a team working on investigating the use of a smart toilet seat for multiple use cases.

What you will do

In the OnePlanet Wageningen Bathroom4Health lab, we have collected several datasets with the Smart Toilet Seat (STS). The STS consists of load cells to measure weight, photoplethysmogram (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors to measure cardiovascular features such as heart rate and pulse wave velocity, an infrared temperature sensor to measure temperature and bio-impedance (BioZ) to measure respiration. In your project, we would like to analyze the performance of our newest prototype with respect to medical reference measurement systems. You are asked to draft hypotheses of the performance of the new seat, to perform a data analysis on a large dataset and identify hardware improvements and draw conclusions for further optimization of the Toilet Seat. As outcome of the project, we aim to draft a high impact scientific paper of this unique technology application.

Your tasks:

  • Perform a literature study on existing technology and the application domain.
  • Draft hypotheses on the performance of the device.
  • Perform statistical analysis / modeling in Python.
  • Identify improvements for future versions of the smart seat.
  • Be part of the Smart Toilet team.
  • Report on results, interpretations and suggestions using visualizations in a scientific paper.
  • If interested: support various side projects related to the Smart Toilet seat.

What we do for you

You will be a student at OnePlanet Research Center, which is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboud UMC and nano-technology world-player imec. Your work here will not only be of academic relevance, but also translated to practical applications where possible. The insights you derive will be used in future Smart Toilet Seat studies and use cases.

With this internship, you will be in the unique position collaborating with the academic experts from for example the Radboud UMC and sensor developers as well as data scientists from Imec. You will gain experience in biomedical human studies. from ideation to execution, to analysis and interpretation. You will be part of a team where everyone has different backgrounds and subjects of expertise, which makes it fun to exchange perspectives and to work together.

Who you are

  • You are an MSc student in the field of biomedical engineering/ bioelectronics/data science.
  • You are interested in biomedical research.
  • You are passionate about linking research to development.
  • You are available for a period of 6 months, starting in February 2026.
  • You have experience with python.
  • You have experience with statistics / modelling.
  • Preferably, you have experience with analyzing time series data.
  • You have experience in academic writing.
