Researcher Optical Gas Sensing

Drive the development of the next-generation optical gas sensing technologies

We are a dynamic research organization with the mission to tackle real-world problems. At OnePlanet, we are seeking an enthusiastic colleague to join us in the development of optical gas sensing technologies.

What you will do

In this role, you will bridge fundamental new technologies to actual applications in the domains of agriculture, food, environment and health, balancing the challenge of technology push vs. market pull. You will be part of our collaborative and multidisciplinary team, working alongside engineers from diverse backgrounds such as electronics, embedded software, algorithm development and domain experts to make optimal use of our shared knowhow. We are working on projects that explore the use of photonic integrated circuits for innovations in environmental sensing and beyond.

As an Optical Gas Sensing Researcher, you will:

  • Bring in experience, knowledge, and network in optical gas sensing to contribute to ongoing research activities and collaborative projects.
  • Conduct research and development aimed at exploring and identifying novel optical techniques for gas sensing across OnePlanet domains, including agriculture, food, environment, and health.
  • Develop prototype sensing devices, including hands-on integration of photonic integrated circuits, optical components, detector into prototypes.
  • Conduct measurement campaigns in real-world settings such as barns.
  • Perform analysis on acquired data sets.
  • Collaborate closely with other teams and external partners, including knowledge institutes.
  • Report the scientific results internally, to customers, and disseminate them externally as inventions or (scientific) publications.
  • Connect with the application field to gain a comprehensive understanding of requirements for optical gas sensing technologies. This includes identifying the state of the art, identifying gaps, and benchmarking new ideas.

What we do for you

We offer a challenging and international environment at the forefront of technology, in an international network of renowned industrial customers. This is your opportunity to bring new technologies to the market that will have an impact on tomorrow’s society.

OnePlanet Research Center is a multidisciplinary collaboration agreement between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboudumc, and imec. Imec The Netherlands, as an employer of choice, offers you an attractive compensation and benefits package including a 100% employer-paid pension plan and flexible working hours. Furthermore, imec-NL offers a wide range of training possibilities.

At the same time, OnePlanet is a collaboration of 3 renowned and globally respected research institutes/universities. By joining the OnePlanet team, you will be part of a team of world changers.  disruptive innovators and practical thinkers. Here, your ideas will have an impact on our future lives.

Who you are

  • MSc or PhD degree in Physics or Engineering, preferably in the field of optical gas sensing.
  • 3+ years of experience in conducting experiments in optics/photonics.
  • Solid background in experimental design and working in lab settings.
  • Experience in data analysis; experience in Python is preferred.
  • Familiarity with absorption line databases and fitting techniques for retrieval of gas concentrations is a plus.
  • Ability to benchmark ideas, ask critical questions, and shape the direction of research with an application-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in an uncertain research process. You see changes as an opportunity to learn and grow and adapt the research course considering boundary conditions and resources at hand.
  • Ability to take initiative and responsibility for team success, which means thinking proactively, working both independently and in a multidisciplinary team, and having a creative and problem-solving attitude are attributes that define yourself.
  • Excellent communication skills in English.
