Researcher in Novel Materials for Future High-performance Logic

What you will do

The scaling roadmap of logic technologies continues to evolve, creating opportunities for materials beyond silicon. Among the most promising candidates are two-dimensional semiconductors and related low-dimensional systems. While materials such as MoS₂, WS₂  or WSs₂ have been extensively studied, emerging systems including HfS₂, InSe and Bi₂O₂Se offer unique opportunities in terms of transport, native oxides, and integration potential.

In this role, you will help shape imec's exploration of novel materials for future transistor technologies. You will identify top material candidates, define promising device concepts, and experimentally evaluate their viability through rapid material-to-device learning cycles in our university-style lab.

You will:

  • Establish access to 2D or other promising materials through external collaborations (academic/commercial), and the development of in-house growth capabilities.
  • Identify and screen promising material candidates through literature studies and collaboration with internal/external modelling teams.
  • Assess material stability (and develop mitigation strategies), define integration paths addressing material constraints, fabricate and characterize proof-of-concept devices in lab.

You will work in a multidisciplinary environment spanning materials science, device engineering and modelling, and disseminate your results through publications and presentations.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. With your talent, passion and expertise, you’ll become part of a team that makes the impossible possible. Together, we shape the technology that will determine the society of tomorrow.

We are committed to being an inclusive employer and proud of our open, multicultural, and informal working environment with ample possibilities to take initiative and show responsibility. We commit to supporting and guiding you in this process; not only with words but also with tangible actions. Through imec.academy, 'our corporate university', we actively invest in your development to further your technical and personal growth.

We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a market appropriate salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

  • You hold a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or Electrical Engineering, with a minimum of 4–5 years of relevant professional experience. Given the scope and seniority of the role, candidates who do not meet this experience requirement will not be considered.
  • You have strong hands-on experience in experimental materials research and/or device fabrication, preferably involving 2D materials and nanoscale devices.
  • You are a self-starter who thrives in exploratory research, can define research directions autonomously, and turns ideas into experiments.
  • You are an avid networker with existing links to academic and/or industrial partners.
  • You have a solid understanding of materials physics and can collaborate effectively across experimental and modelling teams.
  • You communicate effectively in English and enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams.

IMEC and its affiliates will not accept unsolicited resumes from any source other than directly from a candidate. IMEC will consider unsolicited referrals and/or resumes submitted by vendors such as search firms, staffing agencies, professional recruiters, fee-based referral services and recruiting agencies (hereafter “Agency”) to have been referred by the Agency free of charge. IMEC will not pay a fee to any Agency that does not have a prior written agreement with IMEC, validated by its HR department, in place regarding a specific job opening and allowing to submit resumes.
