Membrane Researcher for Artificial Organs

Imec is a world leader in nano-electronics. It leverages its scientific knowledge with the innovative power of global partnerships in IoT, healthcare, and environmental sensing.  As a result of these partnerships, we can deliver technology solutions relevant to industry. In its unique high-tech environment, international top talent is committed to providing the building blocks for a better life in a sustainable society. Imec the Netherlands is an independent R&D center that develops technologies for wireless sensor technologies and flexible electronics, in an open innovation setting and dedicated research trajectories.

By joining the Health Research team in Eindhoven as a Membrane Researcher for Artificial Organs, you will be part of a team of disruptive innovators and thinkers. Together, with our Researchers and Engineers, you will work on hybrid bio-technological building blocks that together form closed loop systems for the realization of next-generation artificial organs for autonomous care. In the first instance the focus of your work will be on an implantable artificial kidney replacement solution. In collaboration with our clinical partners, external research groups and internal imec groups. We invite you to be part of our ambitious team where your ideas will have an impact on our society and our future lives.

What you will do

We need you as a Membrane Researcher for Artificial Organs to:

  • Conduct research on reusable and scalable building blocks for the development of artificial organs. Examples of such building blocks are membrane/filter technology and bio-hybrid solutions.
  • Design and perform hands-on experiments, such as membrane permeability testing and troubleshooting, developing flow-cells, for further improvements of the filter technology (for example artificial kidney).
  • Define concepts and architectures for prototypes and applications while keeping in mind scalability, manufacturability, costs etc.
  • Validate your concepts and prototypes experimentally in a lab environment, process and report data/results.
  • Work closely together with internal stakeholders such as biomedical engineers, electronic designers, physicians, and external partners such as the Dutch Kidney Foundation and clinical partners for the realization of the projects.
  • Your work is disseminated as inventions, publications, key technology, or directly to customers.

What we do for you

We offer a challenging and international environment at the forefront of technology, in an international network of renowned industrial customers. This is your opportunity to help bring new technologies to the market that will have an impact on tomorrow's society. You will join a team of disruptive innovators and thinkers that work with both academia and industry to shape the future. You will be in a dynamic environment where you can work together with top experts in a wide variety of fields and have the opportunity to develop your personal skills.

Imec The Netherlands, as an employer of choice, offers you an attractive compensation and benefits package including a 100% employer-paid pension plan and flexible working hours. Furthermore, imec-NL offers a wide range of training possibilities. For international candidates, we provide support in the relocation process.

Who you are

  • PhD or a Master's degree with 5+ Years of experience in areas such as chemical engineering/material engineering/membrane technology or equivalent fields, oriented in the fields of biology/pharma for filtration, separation and/or drug-delivery applications.
  • A good understanding of mass transport across membranes and interfacial chemistry for biomedical applications is a must.
  • Hands on experience with materials and chemistry- synthesis, modification and characterization of membranes is a must.
  • Knowledge in design software like AutoCAD, CFD simulations like COMSOL, programming software like Matlab & Python is a big plus.
  • Knowledge in physical and chemical characterization methods like SEM, XPS, TGA, HPLC, MS, is nice to have.
  • A hands-on and exploratory attitude, which means taking initiative, thinking pro-actively, having a flexible approach, and solving problems daily are attributes that define yourself.
  • Flexible team player that ensures a smooth transfer of proofs-of-concept towards implementation in prototypes for field testing.
  • Able to deal with ambiguity by generating results in an uncertain research process. You see change as an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English (written and spoken).
