Power semiconductor technologies are key enablers for the electrification of our society, supporting applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, data centers, and industrial power conversion. As device technologies continue to evolve towards higher voltages, greater power densities, and improved efficiency, advanced characterization and testing capabilities become increasingly important. 

At imec, we develop next-generation high-voltage semiconductor technologies and applications. Evaluating these devices requires sophisticated measurement infrastructure, safe operation under demanding conditions, and a high degree of automation to ensure efficient use of laboratory resources and rapid technology learning cycles.To support these activities, we are looking for a Test Application & Automation Development Engineer who will play a key role in developing, operating, and continuously improving imec's measurement infrastructure for high-voltage device research. This position combines technical ownership of advanced test platforms with broader laboratory engineering support across multiple R&D programs. 

This is a dual-focus role: 
50% focused on developing, automating, and maintaining test infrastructure for high-voltage GaN device applications 
50% focused on laboratory engineering, tool support, and infrastructure development across a broader range of semiconductor R&D activities 

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain test applications, measurement platforms, and automation solutions for high-voltage device research. 
  • Design and integrate hardware, instrumentation, software, and safety systems into reliable test environments. 
  • Improve laboratory efficiency, throughput, data quality, and user experience through automation and standardization. 
  • Translate experimental requirements from researchers into practical and scalable engineering solutions. 
  • Act as tool owner/responsible for designated test infrastructure, ensuring availability, reliability, documentation, and continuous improvement. 
  • Support laboratory users and collaborate with researchers and software developers. 
  • Contribute to the roadmap of future testing and characterization capabilities.

Who you are

  • You have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Applied Physics, Automation Engineering, or a related field. 
  • You have preferably 3+ years experience with laboratory instrumentation and electronic measurement systems. 
  • Hands-on experience building, integrating, or maintaining test setups. 
  • Knowledge of semiconductor devices, power electronics, wafer-level testing, or high-voltage systems. 
  • Understanding of laboratory safety and engineering best practices. 
  • Experience with test automation and instrument communication. 
  • Familiarity with SCPI, VISA, GPIB, LAN-based instrumentation, or similar technologies. 
  • Programming experience in Python, LabVIEW, or equivalent automation environments. 
  • Hands-on engineer with a strong problem-solving mindset. 
  • Structured, quality-driven, and capable of taking ownership. 
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills. 
  • Enthusiastic about enabling researchers through innovative engineering solutions. 
  • You live in Belgium or are willing to relocate.
