Postdoctoral Researcher 300 mm GaN MOCVD

Research & development - Leuven | Just now

The epitaxy research group seeks a motivated post-doctoral scientist to advance GaN epitaxy activities on 300 mm Si substrates, crucial for integrating Power and RF devices in imec’s next-generation CMOS platform.

Postdoctoral Researcher 300 mm GaN MOCVD

What you will do

Responsibilities include developing and optimizing Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) processes for GaN-based High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) on 300 mm silicon. Success requires strong teamwork, thinking outside the box and supporting colleagues within imec’s interdisciplinary R&D structure. Project updates will be shared internally, presented at international conferences, and published in top journals.

As a postdoctoral researcher in epitaxial growth, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop and optimize MOCVD growth processes for AlGaN/GaN based heterostructures on large-diameter substrates (e.g., 300 mm Si substrates).
  • Execute and/or interpret structural and optoelectronic characterizations, such as X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, Hall effect measurements, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and secondary-ion mass spectrometry, and correlate these material properties with growth parameters to optimize the process further.
  • Investigate defect reduction strategies, manage integrated layer strain, and optimize wafer bow control to ensure the deposition of high-quality devices on large-diameter substrates.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from the integration and device team to guarantee that the device stacks meet the electrical performance targets for the GaN HEMTs.
  • Gain a deep understanding of the physical and chemical processes that govern epitaxial growth dynamics and device behavior.
  • Share and discuss your R&D results and fundamental understanding with your team and interdisciplinary project colleagues during frequent meetings.
  • Support your epitaxy team members with your scientific expertise in their projects.
  • Report on your work to internal and external partners at international conferences. Publish key results in scientific journals and transform new ideas into intellectual property (IP).

Growth and characterisation activities are primarily carried out in imec’s 200 and 300 mm cleanrooms.

Duration of this postdoctoral position will be 3 years.

What we do for you

We offer you the opportunity to join one of the world’s premier research centers in nanotechnology at its headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. We are aware that your valuable contribution makes imec a top player in its field. Your energy and commitment are therefore appreciated by means of a market appropriate salary with many fringe benefits.

Who you are

  • You recently obtained a PhD in Physics, Material Science, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in epitaxial growth of GaN materials using MOCVD.
  • Strong background in III-nitrides epitaxy and associated characterization techniques.
  • You already have a fundamental knowledge in semiconductor technology, crystallography and device physics, in particular in GaN/AlGaN devices.
  • You are an enthusiastic and creative team player with strong networking, communication and reporting skills who likes to work in a multicultural researcher team.
  • You have a strong focus on quality for your deliverables and development progress and set high standards in everything you do with a strong attention to details.
  • Good knowledge of (spoken and written) English is a must.
