Student project: Neuromorphic compression for brain computer interfaces

*Important for non-EU students: You'll need to be registered at a Dutch university to meet immigration requirements.

Use compression inspired from retinas to reduce large amount of data from brain sensing

What you will do

  • Algorithm Optimization: Refactor and optimize existing neuromorphic compression algorithm to improve processing speed and reduce the computational footprint during real-time telemetry.
  • Benchmarking & Validation: Conduct comparative analyses between neuromorphic compression and standard compression formats focusing on compression ratios and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) preservation.
  • Hardware Integration Support: Assist in mapping the neuromorphic compression logic onto hardware-efficient architectures (such as FPGAs or ASIC) to simulate edge-case telemetry scenarios.
  • Dataset Pre-processing: Curate and prepare large-scale in-vivo neural datasets for testing, ensuring the encoder handles diverse firing rates and background noise profiles effectively.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed documentation of code changes and performance metrics, contributing to a technical report or manuscript regarding the system's efficiency in high-density recording setups.

What we do for you

  • You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, data scientists, and neuroscientists dedicated to pushing the boundaries of high-density neural telemetry.
  • Joining imec for this internship offers more than just a line on a resume; it’s a career-accelerator in the MedTech and NeuroTech sectors:
  • Access to Proprietary Tech: Work with state-of-the-art neural probes and hardware prototypes that aren't available in most university settings.
  • Mentorship: Receive direct guidance from industry-leading experts who are pioneers in bio-electronics and signal processing.
  • Ecosystem Networking: Gain exposure to imec’s vast network of partners, ranging from top-tier universities to global pharmaceutical and tech giants.
  • High-Impact Portfolio: The opportunity to contribute to a Horizon Europe funded project, potentially leading to co-authorship on technical papers or presentations at international conferences.

Who you are

  • You have background in Electrical Engineering.
  • Familiar with numerical analysis.
  • Good knowledge in digital and embedded systems.
  • Strong interest in neural engineering.
