Student project: neural signal decoding for a distributed brain-computer interface device

Research & development - Eindhoven | More than two weeks ago

You will develop a data analysis pipeline based on a spiking neural network to decode neural signals from an innovative distributed brain-computer interface (BCI) device.

Student Project: neural signal decoding for a distributed brain-computer interface device

What you will do

In this project, we will explore and develop a neural signal decoding pipeline for an event-based BMI device. This application is intended for use in brain implants with limited power and computing resources.

The data size from in vivo neural recording has exponentially increased in the past decades. To reveal the full potential of the data, researchers usually rely on powerful hardware to transfer and process neural data. However, the size and power consumption of data processing hardware hinder the real-world usage of implantable BCI. The heat dissipation from data-transferring devices raises concerns about tissue health near the BCI implant.

To compress the data, we developed a dedicated chip that converts the raw data into events that only respond to local changes in voltage (delta-modulation). In this project, we want to explore all possibilities of using event-based data to further compress and decode behavioral data from model animals online while consuming minimal energy. This project will potentially expand to analysis from a distributed recording system and involve hardware optimization.
