What you will do

The Quantum Computing initiative is launched to address the technology challenges associated with the upcoming computing paradigm. The center of activities is located at the imec campus in Leuven (near Brussels) and is expected to grow continuously over the next couple of years.
This initiative aims to create a collaborative environment to build the technology needed for a functional programable quantum computer. imec is using its 300mm cleanroom and semiconductor technology know-how to build platforms for qubits and qubit arrays.

Your responsibilities as a quantum computing device researcher:

  • You will define experimental plans, electrical characterization methodology, oversee and conduct electrical characterization on superconducting qubit circuits.
  • You will analyse and discuss measurement results with a team of engineers and scientists, and will use them to suggest improvements and define new learning cycles
  • You will design and/or simulate superconducting qubit devices and arrays, test structures and components, and follow up on converting designs into actual devices
  • You will provide key input in benchmarking qubit devices, identify paths for improvement and system up-scalability, you will assist in defining experimental strategy for advancing superconducting qubit development and shape the research direction in the field
  • You will explore paths towards improving qubit gate fidelity through pulse control and optimization, in a design- and process-aware space, and propose solutions for improved device operation
  • You will contribute to identifying, defining and translating into hardware multi-qubit circuits for the NISQ era
  • You will work closely with process engineers and material scientists and provide them experimental feedback, for improving materials and processes, and with system architects and theoreticians to draft the microarchitecture of future quantum computing systems
  • You will contribute to the development of the software environment for defining and implementing testing methodology, and for increasing the experimental throughput
  • You will operate cryogenic equipment and will contribute to maintaining it operational, and to extending it/its capabilities, according to future program needs and research directions
  • You will participate to the team’s scientific and technical activities, including meetings, guiding of Ph.D. and/or M.Sc. students, publications and participation to specific technical events, workshops and/or conferences.

Who you are

  • You have a Ph.D. in Physics, Electronics or Electrical Engineering. Postdoctoral experience is a strong plus.
  • You have preferably five years or more research experience in Quantum Computing, mainly in Superconducting Qubits
  • You have strong experimental skills and hands-on experience in the characterization of superconducting qubits, you have expertise in microwave theory, circuits and techniques, you are familiar with material aspects relevant for this field
  • You have an excellent understanding of the field. You know the past developments, recognize current advances and can identify challenges and opportunities.  Familiarity with quantum algorithms is a plus.
  • You have practical experience in operating cryogenic equipment, especially dilution refrigerators and RF/MW instrumentation, wiring and cryogenic components associated with experimental platform for superconducting qubits characterization
  • You are familiar with instrumentation software and environments for characterizing qubits, you understand well Python and/or Matlab
  • You have worked in multi-disciplinary teams, ideally interacting with both quantum computing theoreticians, as well as with process development engineers and material scientists
  • You are a communicative team player, familiar with international work environments, also able to work independently
  • You have an excellent knowledge of English.
