Transmission Electron Microscopy Specialist 

In the Material and Components Analysis (MCA) Department at imec we apply a variety of structural, chemical, topography and electronic measurement methods to support the needs of imec’s pilot fabrication facilities for advanced semiconductor device development. One of the teams within the MCA department is devoted to TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) inclusive of TEM sample preparation. The work is done in close collaboration with the TEM group in Fab Operations where inline automated full wafer capable TEM preparation tools are used. The focus for the Lab TEM team is on unique one-off samples and in-depth analysis with various TEM enabled analysis capabilities included but not limited to HR-TEM, EDX/EELS, strain measurement, and tomography.

What you will do

As TEM specialist your task will be to support - in a rotating shift regime - the TEM service at imec by executing and interpreting TEM measurements.  You will prepare TEM samples starting from single dies, using focused ion beam (FIB) resulting in a thin specimen, observe these in the transmission electron microscope, analyze critical dimensions features, materials defects, and determine chemical composition of stacks.  You will generate a comprehensive report that allows the process teams to use these observations to advance their development work.  
All these tasks will need to be done, after a period of training depending on your initial level of expertise, in an accurate and independent way, working to assure an optimal use of the equipment resources.

Who you are

  • You obtained a master or PhD in materials sciences, physics, chemistry or electronics.
  • One or more years of relevant experience in transmission electron microscopy in a university or industrial R&D lab environment is considered an asset.
  • You are a good communicator, team player, and eager to learn.  
  • You are prepared to work in full continuous rotating shift system : early, late, night and one weekend per month.
  • Good report writing skills, good analytical skills and desire to learn more about new semiconductor materials and advanced structures are essential for a successful implementation of this role.  
  • Depending on the level of experience, you will also have a broader role in analyzing the incoming TEM requests and reviewing characterization reports prepared by other researchers / engineers.  Specific trainings with the available configuration of TEM/FIB tools at imec is foreseen at the start of your assignment.
