Develop a biosensor to detect target molecules in biological fluids

Student project: Molecular biosensors for in vitro and in vivo biomarker detection

What you will do

Biosensing using biomolecules as recognition elements has expanded in recent years due to development of a broader range of receptors for the capture of analytes. Such novel sensors have been successfully employed in diluted biological fluids like blood, saliva, and urine. For this reason, there is a strong interest to explore the potential of molecular biosensors as biofluid sensors at OnePlanet Research Center. However, the stability and response of these elements in undiluted biological fluid are poorly understood.

We are searching for a student to construct a molecular biosensor for sensing in in vitro biological fluids and explore the advantages/disadvantages for utilizing them in future in vivo biosensors.

Your tasks:

  • Perform chemical surface functionalization and characterization with biomolecules.
  • Perform electrochemical sensor measurements and data analysis.
  • Read and assess relevant scientific literature on the topic.

What we do for you

OnePlanet Research Center is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboud UMC and nano-technology world-player imec. Your work will not only be of academic relevance, but is translated to practical applications where possible. You will be part of a team where everyone has different backgrounds and subjects of expertise, which makes it fun to exchange perspectives and to work together. Imec NL provides a monthly internship allowance during the internship.

Who you are

  • You are a MSc student in the field of Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, or comparable.
  • You are available for a period of 6 months.
  • Motivated student eager to work independently.
  • You are a team player.
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
  • Entitled to do an internship in the Netherlands.
