Student project: Low-loss event-based data compression for neural implants

What you will do

You will be exploring the advanced neural network algorithm and hardware architecture for low-loss data compression in brain computer interfaces. Below are main tasks in this research:

  • Literature study of state of the art and understand existing IP and algorithm.
  • Large neural data analysis from public available neural recording data set.
  • Develop inference and training algorithm for the new neural network architecture.
  • Study the hardware requirement and optimize for power and chip-area efficiency.
  • Thesis and publication writing.

We will provide

  • Close guidance and supervision on technical skills and research.
  • GPU and CAD tool required for neural network algorithm development.
  • High channel count neural recording dataset for algorithm development.
  • CADs or FPGA required for hardware evaluation.

Who you are

  • Computer science or electrical Engineering background with good analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of machine learning and neural network is preferred (experience with PyTorch or similar).
  • Strong interest in biomedical applications, especially in neural interfacing.
  • Basic understand in digital VLSIs.
  • Good written and verbal English skills.
