Develop / redesign laser speckle technology to measure sap flows in plant stem and leaf.

Student project: Laser Speckle based sap flow measurements in plants

What you will do

Laser speckle plethysmography is a is a non-invasive optical method to measure blood flow. Within this project you will further explore the use of this technology to measure sap flows in plants. Sap flow measurements is an important parameter to model plant growth and can be used to steer the greenhouse climate for optimal growth conditions.
The assignment consists of exploring the use of laser speckle imaging on plants by building / modifying existing optical set-ups and design data analysis routines in Matlab or Python, to derive the flow rate from the acquired laser speckle images.
Within this assignment you work closely with imec-OnePlanet engineers and researchers of the WUR.

Your tasks:

  • Design and built optical laser speckle set-up for sap flow measurements.
  • Control the set-up using Rasberry Pi.
  • Develop data analysis routines.

What we do for you

OnePlanet Research Center is a multidisciplinary collaboration between Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Radboud University, Radboud UMC and nano-technology world-player imec. Your work will not only be of academic relevance, but is translated to practical applications where possible. You will be part of a team where everyone has different backgrounds and subjects of expertise, which makes it fun to exchange perspectives and to work together. Imec NL provides a monthly internship allowance during the internship.

Who you are

  • You are a MSc student in the field of physics, electronics or comparable.
  • Experience with using Rasberry Pi, Python, Matlab.
