Researcher on Functional Security for Future Compute System

What you will do

System Architecture innovations are key to position imec for success in fast evolving workloads of tomorrow and to differentiate imec’s process technology innovations with system level value proposition. The Compute System Architecture Unit at imec leads research into futuristic high-performance and highly secure RISC-V CPUs to extend imec’s semiconductor research leadership deep into the next decade. This unit is also researching accelerator-based architectures for next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI), compute-in-memory architectures and heterogeneous memory systems.  The subjects of functional safety and cyber security play an increasingly big role in the specification and the design of the modern integrated circuits. Especially in the selection of the processors that are to be integrated, a suitable architecture is needed that guarantees to fulfill the requirements of functional safety and is robust against security attacks. Imec is looking into secured HPC processor cores based on the open RISC-V architecture. This command set architecture allows for the development of customer-specific special processors for safety and security an enables a high-level optimization of the cores into an application.

As we expand our research to better optimize computing, we are looking for a motivated researcher to explore hardware security in future compute systems. As Security Researcher at imec, you will conduct complex, multi-disciplinary security research projects using your research expertise and insights. The ideal candidate can understand requirements and problems with little information, figure out potential research paths, and deal with adversity (steep ramp-up, non-existent/completely-different toolset). In this role sharing results and findings (and driving decisions) with executives and discussing priorities and tasks with other security researchers is also important.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Vulnerability Research (identifying classes of vulnerabilities and writing proof of concept code).
  • Impact Analysis and Mitigation guidance (for important findings by other teams in hard to patch areas).
  • Automation and research guidance (to identify and map new high-priority objectives).
  • Develop robust counter measures and mitigations.
  • Identify vulnerabilities in domain-specific hardware, model them in a system level simulator, and work with development teams to remediate.
  • Develop improvements to current hardware security tools and practices for bug hunting.
  • Use modern hardware tools for modelling new attack vectors.
  • Think like a potential attacker, break things and guide effective fixes and defences.
  • Work with the architecture, design and software teams for debugging issues and resolve them
    generating and securing IP.
  • Keeping up to date on recent developments in the field. You do this by studying literature and interacting with your colleagues.

Who you are

You possess a Bachelor’s/ Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science / ECE with 2-5 years of experience in related areas.

Additional qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of physical attacks and countermeasures.
  • Clear understanding of cryptographic hardware systems.
  • Microprocessor architecture (any prior experience with RISC-V is highly desired).
  • Solid background in digital design, VLSI, computer arithmetic, and ASIC/FPGA implementation.
  • Good programming practice is a must (C/C++, Python).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills combined with an ability to multitask.
  • Enthusiasm to work in a dynamic and team-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with ASIC design flow, validation concepts, coverage, etc. is desirable.
