By joining the Health Research team in Eindhoven as a Researcher Artificial Organs, you will be part of a team of disruptive innovators and thinkers. Together, with our Researchers and Engineers, you will work on hybrid bio-technological building blocks that together form closed loop systems for the realization of next-generation artificial organs for autonomous care. In first instance the focus of your work will be on wearable and implantable artificial kidneys together with our clinical partners in the Netherlands and internal imec groups. What you will do

We need you as a Researcher Artificial Organs to:

  • Conduct research on reusable and scalable building blocks for the development of artificial organs. Examples of such building blocks are wireless communications systems, (ion) sensing technology, dialysis filter technology and bio-hybrid solutions.
  • Perform hands-on work, such as testing and troubleshooting for the further improvements of the dialysis filter technology and Ion-selective-sensing technology for artificial kidney.  
  • Define concepts and architectures for prototypes and applications while keeping in mind scalability, manufacturability, costs etc.  
  • Validate your concepts and prototypes experimentally in a lab environment and later in animal studies and clinical trials.
  • Work closely together with internal stakeholders such as biomedical engineers, electronic designers, physics researchers and external partners such as the Dutch Kidney Foundation and clinical partners for the realization of the projects.
  • Your work is disseminated as inventions, publications, key technology, or directly to customers.

Who you are

  • PhD degree in a relevant area such as Biomedical Engineering, Physics or equivalent.  
  • 2+ years of relevant working experience with the development of (bio)medical system development, preferably in vivo.
  • Experience with wearable or implantable artificial organs is a big plus.
  • Affinity with the development of multi-physical systems (such as sensors, actuators, stimulators) which interface with the human body, electronics, and physics.
  • A broad orientation on potential technology use cases for closed loop bioelectronic medicine systems is preferred.
  • A hands-on and exploratory attitude, which means taking initiative, thinking pro-actively, having a flexible approach, and solving problems daily are attributes that define yourself.
  • Flexible team player that ensures a smooth transfer of proofs-of-concept towards implementation in prototypes for field testing.
  • Able to deal with ambiguity, by generating results in an uncertain research process. You see change as an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
