What you will do

Memories are an essential building block for all electronic systems and great efforts are being made by the industry and academia to improve existing technologies and to invent new ones. Non-volatile data storage is leading the electronics industry today, accounting for over 80% of all transistors manufactured. While 3-dimensional NAND flash memory devices will remain mainstream for generic storage non-volatile applications (SD cards, USB drives, SSD), archival applications might benefit from disruptive device concepts. Such applications require long data storage and extremely high storage density (hence low bit cost), but data access time and endurance can be traded-off, as data are seldom read and basically never rewritten. In this context, an interesting concept consists in coding information as nanometric particles suspended in a liquid medium contained within the memory chip; particles are then physically moved between a larger single reading element and nanometric cavities for storage purposes. Another promising concept consists in coding data as nanolayers of specific metals directly electroplated in small features inside the memory chip; the deposition and dissolution time is proportional to the thickness of the layer, so by thanging the layer thickness it is possible to effectively store information. The extreme of archival memory is the so called “cold storage” where data are indefinetly stored but virtually never read again; for this application a promising concept is to encoded data into very small but stable molecules, like DNA strands or other proteins, which offer an unmatchable volumetric bit density; the challenge would then be to create devices capable of synthesizing and sequencing these molecules reliably and with very high throughput. 

Imec is looking for a researcher to work in advance storage devices and archival memories solutions, featuring ultra-high bit density and virtually infinite data retention. The job will spam from developing the device concepts, designing test vehicle to prove the concepts, realizing the testing circuitry to operate the devices and eventually evaluate the electrical performance.

Who you are

  • You have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or Nanotechnology, material science, Chemistry or Physics 
  • Experience in semiconductor memory technology is mandatory 
  • Experience in analog and digital circuit design is required 
  • Experience in designing and fabricating small PCB circuits (amplifiers, switches, decoders, multiplexers) and FPGA programming is a plus 
  • Previous experience in electrochemistry, nanofluidics and DNA synthesis/sequencing is a plus 
  • Experience with silicon device processing is an important advantage. 
  • We are looking for a self-motivated team player with good communication skills, yet able to independently solve complex problems with limited supervision. 
  • We appreciate your open mind and multi-disciplinary attitude.
  • Given the international character of imec, good knowledge of (spoken and written) English is a must.
