R&D Position—Silicon Photonics for Next-generation Optical Transceivers and Interconnect

Imec is expanding its R&D activities into the field of optical communications. Using imec’s state-of-the-art 200mm and 300mm silicon technology platform, we point our ambition on new breakthroughs in optical transceivers and interconnects. Currently we are opening a R&D position for Silicon Photonics for Next-generation Optical Transceivers and Interconnect.

Expected Seniority Level:

  • Full time employment
  • Senior level or junior level (PhD or equivalent with R&D experience) 

Here's what you'll do:

  • Take responsibility for the functional and structure design of photonic devices and circuits
  • Define integration and process flow
  • Explore new integrated photonics solutions for optical transceivers and interconnects
  • Perform design work using industrial standard simulation and layout tools, e.g. Lumerical, Ledit, Luceda, Matlab. (e.g. MMIs, grating couplers, ring resonators, modulators, photodiode, etc.)
  • Laboratory measurement work on characterizing photonic building blocks, circuits, and systems.
  • Improve and optimize existing design methodologies and procedures.
  • Contribute to funded and bilateral projects through their definition and their execution, depending on level of experience and expertise.
  • Report to colleagues and clients.
  • Publish in international journals and contribute to major conferences.

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD degree (or equivalent R&D experience) in photonics, electronics or physics engineering.
  • Experience in developing optical transceivers and interconnect (e.g. optical module, system integration, packaging, test, etc.).
  • Experience in coherent transmission systems, signal integrity, photonic integration, and/or DSP.
  • Experience with industry standard design tools (e.g. Lumerical, Ledit, Luceda, Synposis, Cadence, etc)
  • Experience in programming
  • Experience with foundry tapeout
  • Experience in electronics design/RF design/IC design
  • Experience in publishing on integrated photonics
  • Demonstrate good communication skills for interfacing with internal and external customers
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, while being part of a team
  • Are pragmatic and hands on, with a can-do attitude
  • Experience working in R&D environments
