The IC-design team in imec Netherlands develops innovative solutions for Life Science & Health applications and for massive and heterogeneous sensor networks to connect billions of devices within the internet of things (IoT). We have built various ultra-low-power (ULP) radio ICs like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth-LE, and a UWB 6-10 GHz radio tuned towards precise ranging, localization, and radar. Besides, we deliver our designs to customers, patent different inventions, and publish our results in renowned conferences and papers (ISSCC, RFIC, DATE, JSSC, etc.). 

In this role, you will be part of the Signal processing IC team in imec Eindhoven. Your focus will be on adding innovative digital architecture for signal processing and designing PHY layer algorithms for radio communication, localization, and radar sensing in collaboration with the Analog/Digital IC team. Besides, you will also work on technologies like UWB & Bluetooth, in this position, you have the opportunity to deliver high-quality results while pushing the boundaries of the state-of-the-art.  

What you will do

The focus of the job is to work on new, and innovative designs for radio PHY layer architectures and signal processing schemes for next-generation wireless communication and radar systems e.g. UWB for (indoor) localization, vital signs, and gesture detection using radar, secure car access systems, high data rate communication and brain-computer interfaces. In this role, you will have an impact on the choice of architecture and their implementation. You will deliver high-quality results within the wireless sensing systems program. In this position you will:  

  • Conduct system-level architecting, performance studies, and evaluation of next-generation (radio) communication, localization, and/or radar systems.   
  • Develop novel algorithms and solutions for wireless signal processing blocks, including synchronization, compensation of non-idealities, calibration, error estimation, and correction, e.g., for localization, vital signs and gesture detection, and angle-of-arrival estimation purposes.  
  • Support the specification process of hardware, software, and electronics, and circulate the requirements to subsystems as needed. 
  • Collaborate with the digital design team and together come up with innovative signal processing digital architectures. 
  • Contribute to the signal processing team discussions and collaborate with other engineering disciplines, such as analog/digital IC designers, and hardware and software developers, to understand and define system-level requirements. 
  • Interact with customers and (academic) partners as a technical interface for existing and new collaborations. 
  • Translate your new insights into patent applications and publications at peer-reviewed conferences and journals.

Who you are

  • MSc or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, communications engineering, or equivalent with 10+ years of relevant experience. 
  • Solid understanding of generic signal theory, signal processing, and communications theory. 
  • Solid experience with digital circuit design. 
  • Solid experience in the state-of-the-art of digital PHY layer (wireless) communication, and modulation schemes. 
  • Experience with digital verification: verification plan definition, methodologies, execution and tracking. 
  • Experience in Python, MATLAB, System Verilog, C/C++, system C and GIT or equivalent. 
  • Knowledge of FPGA-development is a plus. 
  • Experience with localization and radar technologies is a plus. 
  • The interest and ability to innovate, discover and explore new paths and opportunities.  
  • Structural way of working and ability to develop and manage activity planning is highly preferred. 
  • You are someone who has a broad interest across disciplines and who likes to embrace new challenges. 
  • Team player with good communication skills and the ability to translate ideas to colleagues with multidisciplinary backgrounds. 
  • A hands-on and exploratory attitude, which means taking initiative, thinking proactively, having a flexible approach, and solving problems daily are attributes that define yourself. 
  • Your communication skills (written and spoken) in English are excellent.
