What you will do

Under the EnergyVille collaboration, imec is working with Belgian research partners KU Leuven, VITO and UHasselt in the fields of sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. Since the 1980's, imec has built a leading position in Photovoltaics (PV) with important developments in the fields of industrial solar cells, modules, and systems. Today, imec’s PV research department within imo-imomec (a joint research institute with UHasselt) is focusing on developing next-generation PV cell and module technologies which convert sunlight more efficiently, require less resources to manufacture, and which can be tailored for various applications (rooftops, buildings, transport, agriculture, etc.). To conduct this research, imo-imomec has invested in latest generation equipment for module assembly (multiwire interconnection, lamination, etc.) and advanced characterization and testing. 

As a process engineer for the multiwire interconnection of advanced solar cells you will be part of imo-imomec Wafer-based PV technology team (WAFERPV). Your tasks and responsibilities will include: 

  • Developing and documenting new recipes for industrial high-temperature tabbing-stringing of latest generation high efficiency crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cell concepts (PERC, TOPCon, HJT, IBC, etc.)
  • Developing and documenting new recipes for imec’s proprietary low-temperature multiwire interconnection approach for advanced cell concepts (high efficiency c-Si solar cells, Pk/Si tandems, flexible PV technology, etc.)
  • Fabricating PV modules in various sizes (from 1-cell laminates to full-size demonstrators) for research, development, and demonstration purposes.
  • Performing mechanical (pull tests, load tests, etc.) and electrical (light I-V, electroluminescence imaging, spectral response, etc.) characterization before and after accelerated climatic tests.
  • Supporting other staff members (students, assistants, engineers, researchers, etc.) in the development of next-generation interconnection technologies for multiple funded and bilateral projects involving leading companies and research organizations.  
  • Training new users and sharing your knowledge internally across various teams.
  • Growing to become the main process responsible for multiwire interconnection technologies at imo-imomec.

Who you are

  • You have a master’s in science or engineering and display strong engineering skills and mindset. Degrees in materials science or electrical/energy engineering are a strong plus. 
  • You have 1-5 years’ experience in PV module interconnection technologies or PV module manufacturing. 
  • You are curious, enjoy performing hands-on experiments, and are able to deal with changes.
  • You are a precise, methodical and detail-oriented person, and enjoy working in a team.
  • You are fluent in English and have good communication and reporting skills.
