What you will do

Nowadays, cameras are ubiquitous. The image sensors are expanding their scope in the direction of gathering information beyond color imaging – or replicating human vision. For this information acquisition, a dedicated sensor rather than a general image sensor is required. Some of disruptive technologies receiving a lot of attention are: QD (Quantum Dot) for SWIR (Short Wave InfraRed) vision or SPAD (Single-Photon Avalanche Diode) detectors for LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) applications. Recently, imec demonstrated state-of-the-art smallest pixel pitch and highest SWIR quantum efficiency QD-based image sensor and presented SPAD detectors with one of the highest PDP (Photon Detection Probability). For further widening usages to the scientific and space applications, research on the effects of radiation is essential.
The goal of this postdoc position is to test imec’s state-of-the-art detectors in harsh conditions and investigate the effects of different types of irradiations. The work consists of characterization of the already available detectors then analyzing and modeling the effect based on a deep understanding of the device and solid-state physics, and finally proposing solutions on how to avoid possible damages due to the high energy radiations. The work will be interdisciplinary, in close collaboration with several research groups at imec.

Who you are

  • You are a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher, holding a PhD degree in nano-engineering, physics, material science, electrical engineering, or related. 
  • You have experience with image sensor or photodetector design and characterization. 
  • You are a team player and have good communication skills as you will work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team spanning several imec departments. 
  • Given the international character of imec, excellent knowledge of English is a must.
This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
