The performance of many electronic applications and devices is currently limited by thermal issues. The insufficient heat removal from the heat sources prevents the devices from operating at their full potential. For high performance compute applications, the thermal bottleneck typically is the active cooling solution itself, while for mobile applications the limiting factor is the heat spreading within the product. Considering the scaling trends, the gap between the thermally limited, usable power density and the potential power density is only expected to increase. In case of 3D systems, where high-power chips and temperature sensitive components are vertically stacked together, the thermal management solution is even more challenging due to the high thermal coupling and difficulty to remove the heat from the central layers of the stack. At the other hand, new developments in power delivery architectures, fabrication techniques and materials offer exiting opportunities to integrate innovative thermal solutions.

What you will do

The aim of this postdoctoral research is to develop integrated heat spreading solutions across the different integration levels, from the device level over the metallization, block and chip level up to the system level, in order to increase the performance of future applications. Furthermore, the thermal properties of advanced heat spreading materials and the thermal performance of the developed solutions will be experimentally characterized. 

The following tasks are foreseen for the assessment of the thermal management solutions: 

  • Numerical modeling of the potential impact of the integration of advanced materials with promising thermal properties on the thermal behavior and on the electrical performance of scaled devices
  • Collaboration with the technology and integration engineers to build a proof-of-concept for the integration of the heat spreading solutions on imec’s various thermal vehicles
  • Experimental thermal characterization of the heat spreading performance for different emulated application scenarios 
    Development of characterization methodologies and test structures to measure the in-plane and through-plane thermal properties of thermal management materials.

Who you are

  • You have a Ph.D in Engineering or Physics 
  • Experience with numerical thermal modeling 
  • Experience with experimental thermal analysis and material characterization is considered a plus 
  • You have a good track record of publications in journal papers and conference proceedings 
  • Given the international character of imec, good knowledge of English is an absolute must. 
  • You are an enthusiastic and creative team player with strong networking, communication and reporting skills who likes to work in a multicultural team of imec researchers, PhD students and postdocs and industrial partners.

This postdoctoral position is funded by imec through KU Leuven. Because of the specific financing statute which targets international mobility for postdocs, only candidates who did not stay or work/study in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years can be considered for the position (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc. are not taken into account).
