Be a part of our growing Photonics team and contribute to the next-generation Automotive, 3D Sensing, Datacom and Healthcare applications. 

What you will do

We are looking for a LiDAR System Architect to expand our team and photonics activities in Eindhoven. You will contribute to the R&D for 3D Sensing, Healthcare, and Automotive domains by means of (statistical) modeling, with a focus on LiDAR (sub)-systems, with corresponding algorithms and control loops. Together with external partners and internal photonic groups in imec Belgium, we aim to extend our research capabilities into combining Silicon and Indium Phosphide photonics area for Health, Connectivity, and Industrial (f.i. LiDAR) applications, thereby leveraging our existing competences in CMOS and Neuromorphic design. To help us achieve this goal, we are looking for a LiDAR System Architect who wants to support us in working on photonic integrated systems.

Your main responsibilities as a LiDAR System Architect are:

  • Building a simulation framework and (sub)-system models based on theory or reference/test data. Use these models to support architectural decisions and optimize the system’s performance.
  • Identifying loss factors on-chip and off-chip, calculating device performance etc.
  • Designing, testing, and deploying algorithms for prototypes and other products.
  • Support the specification process of hardware, software, and electronics, and circulate the requirements to subsystems as needed.
  • Working with internal and external partners for prototype designing, testing, and validating.
  • Leveraging and implementing photonic and other technology from other imec research sites.
  • Your work is disseminated as inventions, publications, key technology, or directly to customers.

Who you are

  • You hold a Ph.D. or master's degree in (applied) physics, optical science, electronics, electrical engineering, or similar.
  • 4+ years of experience in system architecture where a heterogeneous integration of several technologies is applied.
  • Experience with either FMCW LiDAR r or FMCW Radar systems is a must.
  • Experience with system level modeling is a must.
  • Experience in programming with Python, MATLAB, or similar system modeling software is needed.
  • Knowledge about Silicon and/or Indium Phosphide photonics design, fabrication and characterization is required (Knowledge of opportunities and limitations in chip design).
  • Understanding of phase noise, PLL modeling, and preferable electro-optical PLLs.
  • Affinity with digital implementation and embedded software is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with free-space optics is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to operate in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Hands-on attitude; which means taking initiative, thinking proactively, having a flexible attitude, and solving problems.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
