Are you an expert in integrated photonics with experience in electronics design/RF design/IC design, programming, and foundry tape out?  Do you flourish in an R&D environment where you can take the initiative and work independently within a team context? If so, keep reading.

Imec has developed a state-of-the-art technology in its CMOS-fab that enables the fabrication of integrated photonic chips on a large scale in a cost-effective way. Using this technology, successful sensors for telecom, industrial and biomedical applications have already been developed. They promise to revolutionize the application domains in which they are being deployed. We are looking for a Photonics Design Engineer responsible for the functional and architectural design and lab measurement of photonic integrated circuits. 

The Job

  • Design state of the art active and passive photonic components using industry-standard simulation and design tools (e.g., Lumerical, Ledit, Luceda, Matlab)
  • Characterization of photonic building blocks, circuits, and systems
  • Prepare the layout of the photonic integrated circuit components and systems
  • Improve and optimize the existing design methodologies and procedures
  • Contribute to defining and executing funded and bilateral projects, according to your experience and expertise
  • Report to colleagues and clients
  • Publish in international journals and contribute to major conferences

Key Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. degree in Photonics, Electronics or Physics Engineering and demonstrated photonics design or electromagnetic wave propagation experience. 
  • You are published as a first author in topics on integrated photonics
  • Experience working in R&D environments
  • Strong background in electronics design/RF design/IC design
  • Foundry tapeout experience
  • Solid programming experience with the ability quickly take up software and libraries
  • Experience with industry-standard design tools (e.g., Lumerical, Ledit, Luceda, Synposis, Cadence, etc)
  • You are pragmatic and hands-on, with a can-do attitude
  • Strong communication skills across international teams, internal and external customers
  • You enjoy taking the initiative and working independently within a team context
  • Fluent in English—fluency in other languages is a plus
