We are looking for a Photonic System R&D Engineer to expand our team and photonics activities in Eindhoven. You will contribute to the R&D for 3D Sensing, Healthcare and Automotive domains by means of (statistical) modeling and simulation of LiDAR (sub)-systems as well as designing algorithm and control loops. You will work closely together in a multidisciplinary team consisting of Photonic, Electronics, Digital and Software experts in the development and testing of cutting-edge integrated Photonic Systems. Besides, you will also interact with customers and suppliers to align on planning, progress, and transfer of results.

What you will do  

We are looking for a Photonic System R&D Engineer to expand our team and photonics activities in Eindhoven. You will contribute to the R&D for 3D Sensing, Healthcare and Automotive domains by means of (statistical) modeling and simulation of LiDAR (sub)-systems as well as designing algorithm and control loops. You will work closely together in a multidisciplinary team consisting of Photonic, Electronics, Digital and Software experts in the development and testing of cutting-edge integrated Photonic Systems. Besides, you will also interact with customers and suppliers to align on planning, progress, and transfer of results.

Your main responsibilities as a Photonic System R&D Engineer are:

  • Building a simulation framework and (sub)-system models based on theory or reference/test data. Use these models to support architectural decisions and optimize the system’s performance.
  • Designing, testing, and deploying algorithms for prototypes and other products.
  • Support the specification process of hardware, software, and electronics, and circulating the requirements to subsystems as needed.
  • Working with internal and external partners for prototype designing, testing, and validating.
  • Working in close cooperation with multi-disciplinary project teams consisting of electrical, mechanical, software, and biomedical engineers, to define the specifications, design, implement, verify, and validate systems. 
  • Your work is disseminated as inventions, publications, key technology, or directly to customers.

Who you are

  • MSc or Ph.D. degree in Electrical engineering, Communications Engineering, Applied Physics or equivalent with 3+ years of experience.
  • Solid understanding of statistical signal processing, estimation, and detection theory, and state machines is a must.
  • Solid understanding of complex signal  theories, for example passband and baseband equivalents. 
  • Solid understanding of phase noise, PLL modelling, and preferable electro-optical PLLs.
  • Good programming skills, preferable experience with object-oriented programming.
  • Experience with either Radar or LIDAR FMCW systems is a must.
  • Experience in behavior modelling of (non-linear) integrated photonics components, like photodetectors, EDFA, and lasers is a plus.
  • Affinity or experience in free space optics (designing free space optics), array processing is a plus.
  • Ability to make rational trade-offs between (algorithmic) complexity and performance is a plus.
  • Affinity with digital implementation and embedded software is a plus.
  • Able to set up a full system simulator, for instance in MATLAB/Python is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to operate in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Hands-on attitude; which means taking initiative, thinking pro-actively, having a flexible attitude and solving problems.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken).
