Laser Researcher - Integrated Photonics

What you will do

We are looking for a Laser Researcher with expertise in theoretical physics, mathematical modeling, solving rate equations, designing lasers, and optics/electromagnetism to join our Photonics team in imec Eindhoven. You will be responsible for developing and applying theoretical models to design novel optical devices and complex laser systems. You will serve as a link between theoretical and experimental physics and contribute to next-generation Automotive, 3D Sensing, LiDAR, Datacom and Healthcare applications. 

Your main responsibilities as a Laser Researcher - Integrated Photonics are: 

• Perform mathematical modeling and analysis to optimize device performance, considering factors such as power efficiency, spectral bandwidth, and signal-to-noise ratio.
• Solve rate equations to analyze the behavior of laser systems and predict their output characteristics. 
• Develop and apply theoretical models for the design of advanced laser systems and photonic devices, using relevant software tools.
• Validate theoretical models and optimize device performance through experimental design and data analysis in collaboration with experimental physicists or by yourself (a pre).
• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at conferences and scientific meetings.
• Stay up to date with the latest developments in photonics, optics, and electromagnetism, and use this knowledge to shape research projects and identify new research directions.

Who you are

• Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with a strong background in theoretical physics, optics, and electromagnetism. 
• Experience in mathematical modeling and analysis, including solving rate equations.
• Hands-on experience in tools for designing optical devices and laser systems, such as Lumerical and other relevant software ie. Python, Matlab, Harold, Nextnano.
• Demonstrated ability to design and optimize laser systems and photonic devices, including the ability to work effectively with experimental physicists.
• Affinity to do lab experiments independently is a plus.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to operate in a multi-disciplinary team.
• Hands-on attitude, which means taking initiative, thinking proactively, having a flexible attitude, and solving problems.
• Excellent English communication skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely for publication and present research at scientific meetings.
