Junior Embedded Electronic Systems Engineer/Architect for health applications

What you will do

Imec has a strong experience and background in leading-edge circuit and system development for healthcare and life science applications. We are continuously looking at innovative solutions for existing as well as new application domains. Our team focuses primarily on high-performance, ultra-low-power and miniaturized analog sensor readout circuits and systems with embedded signal processing and analysis. We are looking to expand our team with a junior embedded electronic systems engineer and test engineer for biomedical and life-science applications. 

Your primary role will be to assist experienced system architects in developing advanced miniature electronic systems in a lean and agile manner based on state-of-the-art technology developed at imec. You will also be responsible for developing test setups for characterizing custom-designed ASICs as well as performing electronic testing and characterization of experimental prototype hardware. 

Also, you will assist experienced system engineers with the design, implementation and validation of low-power, high-quality electronic systems. You will be responsible for analog, mixed-signal PCB design (schematic entry and layout). You will use commercial-off-the-shelf components as well as proprietary experimental imec technology. You will develop microcontroller firmware and/or programmable logic that operate the developed systems. You will verify your designs in experimental bench-top measurement setups, select test instruments and write software for controlling the test setup and for analyzing the data using Labview and Matlab. A lean and agile development, pragmatic approach and hands-on attitude are crucial to ensure timely results. 

Therefore, you will:

  • Contribute to embedded system design 
  • Develop PCBs (analog-mixed signal circuits) including schematic design and layout
  • Implement firmware on microcontroller
  • In some cases, implement control and interfacing HDL on FPGAs
  • Design and apply test environments for sensitive, high performance biomedical circuits, including acquisition and visualization software
  • Develop instrument control software (Labview)
  • Develop signal analysis scripts (Matlab/Python)
  • Develop test scripts for probe and system validation (C++)
  • Validate different aspects of acquisition systems (hardware, VHDL code, API)
  • Write specification documents, test procedures and test reports

Who you are

  • You have a master in electronics engineering or industrial engineering.
  • You combine this with some experience with CAD tools for PCB schematic entry and layout.
  • You have some knowledge of analog and digital circuit design concepts, testing and measurement of analog and digital circuits and microcontrollers and embedded firmware development.
  • You understand industry standard interface protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, ...)
  • You have at least basic knowledge of Python and/or Matlab for data acquisition & analysis and willingness to learn.
  • You have at least basic knowledge of CAD tools for mechanical design (AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
  • Basic knowledge of VHDL or Verilog is a plus.
  • You show some eagerness to learn and take on tasks outside your comfort-zone.
  • You have a hands-on attitude, capable of debugging and patching HW issues.
  • You have a pragmatic approach with a strong result-driven mindset.
  • You work in an organized and well-structured manner. You document your methods and results.
  • You are a flexible and result-oriented team player who can work independently.
