lmec is a global pioneer in developing integrated silicon photonics technology through its Optical I/O R&D program targeting short-reach optical communications. This technology is successfully offered via wafer-level prototype fabrication services to customers in telecom, datacom, computing, bio-medical, and sensing applications. By leveraging the mature Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) processes used in electronics, high-volume and high-yield Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) can be fabricated at a relatively low cost. Among the major building blocks in a PIC, the photodetector is critical in interfacing with electronics used for data processing. Besides, standard photodetectors based on p-i-n diodes, imec has been working on the development of Ge-on-Si (A)PDs and monolithic III – V photodetectors. The development aims to target highly sensitive optical receivers for the application of telecommunication and data centers. In this context, the goal is to research optical receivers with optical amplification to achieve low power consumption combined with high sensitivity PDs in the 200 mm and 300 mm platforms at imec.
As a Germanium-based optical device designer, you contribute to further developing germanium photodetectors in our silicon photonics technology as an owner. You act as the technical interface between cross-collaborating teams of Layout design, Epitaxy, process integration, SiPho test, and customers and use their feedback to improve your class of devices. You participate in internal SiPho development runs on 200mm and 300mm to implement improved component designs and you leverage imec’s automated SiPho test stations to implement and test your new device concepts with fast turnaround times. You will be working with a highly talented pathfinding team of 15 under 3DSiP unit who have expertise in their fields and are always curious.
Please note that the position is based in Leuven (Belgium). Onsite presence of at least 3 days is required.
