FIB/TEM R&D Manager

Advances in materials and process technology in nanoelectronics are inherently linked with enhanced fundamental understanding. The Materials and Component Analysis department (MCA) within imec plays a critical role in providing this fundamental understanding. This is facilitated by the onsite 200 mm or 300 mm fabs devoted to semiconductor R&D, all of which are situated in Leuven, Belgium, which coincidently was voted Europe’s 2020 capital of innovation (see: https://ec.europa.eu/info/news/leuven-european-capital-innovation-2020-2020-sep-24_en)). 

The MCA department contains state-of-the-art equipment dedicated to semiconductor analysis ranging from ARPES, APT, EDS, EELS, ERD, FIB, Raman, RBS, SIMS, the SPM suite, PEEM, TEM, TERS, XPS, UPS, ...  Among these, TEM/FIB plays a crucial role in imaging the most advanced materials and device structures, and in determining their elemental composition. Our TEM and FIB systems are operated in service mode in a 24/7 regime with an emphasis on high volume output to support fast cycles of learning. Faced with the continuing demand for higher volume, shorter turn around times and more complex technical challenges, we are looking for a manager with the right balance of R&D and service support.

What you will do

Your responsibility will be twofold. On one hand you will be leading R&D efforts to take FIB/TEM, as applied in the semiconductor industry, to the next level (attained through technique and/or methodology development). On the other hand, you will be responsible for the daily operation and organization of the TEM/FIB service targeting an optimum output in terms of quality, volume, turn-around-time and customer satisfaction. Your tasks will include: 

  • Interacting with senior scientific staff to stimulate advances in technical approaches and to jointly define long term research initiatives whether internally or through collaborations with local Universities such as the KUL and the University of Antwerp.
  • Interfacing with customers to understand how to enhance their learnings (ensured through the most effective application of existing equipment and methodologies) and to attain an understanding of the future analytical needs of the semiconductor industry. 
  • Managing the daily TEM/FIB operations (planning of the requests, prioritization, follow-up of the workflow, report evaluation). This also includes:
  • Optimizing operational procedures of the TEM/FIB service leading to high quality, high volume and short turn-around-time
  • Organizing complementary external resources (outsourcing), where necessary 
  • Following up maintenance and repair with the aim of minimal downtime
  • Organizing effective TEM/FIB training and presentations
  • Ensuring a safe working environment
  • Effective people management

Who you are

  • You have a PhD degree in Engineering/Physics or equivalent through relevant experience. 
  • You have a background in TEM R&D and good understanding of semiconductor processing.  
  • In addition to an excellent knowledge of TEM and FIB capabilities, you possess a basic knowledge on other analytical techniques such that effective hybrid approaches can be leveraged. 
  • You have strong demonstrated managerial capabilities, communication skills and are experienced in analytical Lab management. 
  • The imec environment requires an effective and flexible team player who is results driven and has competent communication skills (written and spoken). 
  • The day-to-day contact with your customers requires a fluency in English. Note: English is the primary language used across the imec sites (imec is a highly multicultural and interactive environment expecting excellence, innovation, and results).
